Spirit of the Marathon? January 25, 2008

We waited and waited and waited.

It finally came the one night showing of the movie “Spirit of the Marathon.”   I will not be surprised if it is the last nights showing.   What a boring, unimaginative, portrayal of what was one of the greatest events of my life.  I would guess that the film makers know nothing about running and worse were unable to capture the grandeur of the marathon.   It wasn’t long into the movie that I turned to look toward David only to see his head down and eyes closed. He was taking a little snooze.

The marathon might have been better served if they had strapped a dozen cameras randomly to some runners and just let the film role!    If you like disjointed film making along with scenes that contribute absolutely nothing to the event itself, you may enjoy bits of this movie.  If you’re looking to be inspired and motivated to go back out on another 20+ mile run, I would suggest purchasing either “Running on the Sun” or “Race for the Soul.”  Both documentaries are about ultra running and  manage to capture the depth of emotion and struggle of the individuals participating.

If you want to see the best footage this film has to offer, view the trailer on-line  free.   Good thing I had already run a couple of  marathons because this film would never had inspired me to try one.

Here’s to keeping the Spirit Alive!
